ICARUS SHELF BRACKETS

ca. 2024

The inspiration for these pieces was taken from a historical investigation of surgical tools. The interest taken in these tools lies in their comparative nature to hardware as they are used like brackets or door handles, to open, close or hold (the body) in position. Surgical tools have also evolved to be ergonomic, fitting into the doctor’s hands like knobs. The increasing evolution of ergonomy in tools has transformed their geometric shapes into biomorphic forms, taking on a semblance to the body. When delving into the study of surgical tools, what compelled most were objects that did not immediately inform their use. They could be reinterpreted and fit a role in a home setting, whilst introducing a dialectic to the wounded body. The brackets were made by casting aluminum. To achieve an organic model resembling the shapes of ergonomic surgical tools the piece was initially worked in a combination of wood and plaster from which the mold was taken.
